Abstract

Road transportation is a vital infrastructure in supporting socio-economic connectivity, but its performance often declines due to excessive traffic loads, vehicle growth, and environmental factors. To predict pavement damage more rationally, a mechanistic-empirical (M-E) approach is used utilizing KENPAVE and WinJULEA software. This study analyzes the structural response of pavement on the Koroulon–Joholanang Road section (Sta. 0+00–1+00) as a case study, focusing on horizontal tensile strain at the base of the asphalt layer and vertical compressive strain over the subsoil which is associated with the potential for fatigue cracking, rutting, and permanent deformation damage. The results of the analysis showed that both software produced relatively similar damage predictions. The highest horizontal strain values were obtained at 0.0004524 (KENPAVE) and 0.0004527 (WinJULEA), while the highest vertical strain was 0.0005964 (KENPAVE) and 0.0005960 (WinJULEA). Based on the equation, initial damage is estimated to follow the sequence of rutting → permanent deformation → fatigue cracking, with the first ages occurring at 372,435–373,556 ESAL (rutting), 599,703–601,710 ESAL (permanent deformation), and 6,635,281–6,652,551 ESAL (fatigue fractures). These findings confirm that the combination of KENPAVE and WinJULEA can be a complementary approach in predicting pavement performance as well as providing a scientific basis for more effective road design and maintenance strategies.
