Abstract

The Bantul Earthquake in 2006 triggered liquefaction phenomena in
Bantul, Sleman, and Klaten. Section 1 of the Yogyakarta – Bawen Toll
Road construction with at-grade and elevated road structures is located
in Sleman, which is categorized as a zone of moderate susceptibility to
liquefaction. The elevated road is constructed above the Selokan
Mataram, an irrigation canal with historical and cultural heritage of
Keraton Yogyakarta. The P-28 structure, as one of the closest to the
irrigation canal wall was selected as the study location for liquefaction
potential analysis because the presence of the irrigation canal near the
structure significantly increases the excess pore water pressure ratio,
which may trigger liquefaction. Liquefaction potential analysis based on
the excess pore water pressure ratio was analyzed using the empirical
method by Yegian and Vitelli (1981) and using one-dimensional (1D) and
two-dimensional (2D) as numerical methods with numerical modeling
approaches based on the PM4Sand constitutive model in PLAXIS 2D. The
results show that the empirical method is more conservative in estimating
the excess pore water pressure ratio (ru) because the increase in the ru is
only based on the safety factor. The results of the 1D and 2D numerical
modeling showed that the distribution of the increase in ru > 0.8 was
significantly different in each soil layer. 2D modeling is more
representative for calculating the increase in ru > 0.8 because it reflects
the field conditions at the P-28 location which has differences in thickness
within similar soil layers and includes the existing irrigation canal which
can increase the liquefaction potential.
