Abstract
Waste rubber tires have become a significant environmental issue in Indonesia due to the continuous increase in the number of motor vehicles. One potential solution is to utilize waste tire rubber powder as an asphalt additive to improve binder performance while reducing environmental pollution. Previous studies have primarily focused on the performance of asphalt mixtures, whereas investigations into the changes in the fundamental physical properties of asphalt binders remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of crumb rubber powder on the physical characteristics of Pen 60/70 asphalt and PG70 asphalt. An experimental laboratory method was employed at the Highway Engineering Laboratory, Universitas Islam Indonesia. The asphalt binders were modified using crumb rubber powder passing sieve No. 16 and retained on sieve No. 30 at variation contents of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% by weight of asphalt. The evaluated physical properties included specific gravity, penetration, softening point, ductility, flash point, and fire point. The results indicate that the incorporation of crumb rubber significantly affects the physical properties of both asphalt binders. Penetration and ductility values decreased, indicating an increase in binder stiffness and a reduction in its elongation capacity. Conversely, the softening point increased, demonstrating improved resistance to high temperatures and permanent deformation. Specific gravity exhibited only minor changes, while flash and fire points slightly decreased due to alterations in the binder's thermal characteristics.
