Abstract

Pile foundation design is generally based on subsurface investigation data, while field verification of pile bearing capacity is commonly conducted using pile driving records. Different calculation methods may produce varying bearing capacity estimates; therefore, their level of agreement needs to be evaluated. This study compares pile bearing capacities The capacities are calculated using the Luciano Décourt and US Army methods, which rely on data from Standard Penetration Tests (SPT).The results are also interpreted from pile driving records using the Engineering News Record (ENR) and Janbu methods. The analyzed pile is a 12 m long precast concrete triangular pile with a side dimension of 0.28 m. The analysis utilized SPT data from the nearest borehole and pile driving records from 12 pile locations. The results show that the ultimate bearing capacities obtained using the US Army and Luciano Décourt methods are 139.28 kN and 237.41 kN, respectively. In contrast, the average bearing capacities interpreted from pile driving records are 318.63 kN using the Janbu method and 488.93 kN using the ENR method. Compared with the Janbu results, the Luciano Décourt method exhibits a difference of 24.28%–25.66%, while the US Army method shows a difference of 54.44%–57.55%. These findings indicate that the Luciano Décourt method provides estimates that are closer to field-based interpretations than the US Army method. Therefore, the Luciano Décourt method may be considered a more representative analytical approach for preliminary pile foundation design when pile driving data are unavailable.
