Abstract

Traffic accidents around school areas represent a critical issue that requires systematic, evidence-based interventions. This study aims to identify the requirements for implementing a School Safety Zone (Zona Selamat Sekolah/ZoSS) at SMK Negeri 2 Wonosari as a strategy to mitigate accident risks. The research employed a field survey covering traffic volume, vehicle speed, pedestrian behavior, escort behavior, and an inventory of existing safety facilities. Data analysis was conducted based on the Regulation of the Directorate General of Land Transportation No. 3236/AJ 403/DRJD/2006 and the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (PKJI, 2023). The findings indicate that traffic volume in the school vicinity is relatively high, with a V/C ratio of 0,444, corresponding to service level C. Average vehicle speeds exceeded the safe threshold of 20 km/h, recorded at 41.28 km/h for motorcycles and 39.45 km/h for cars. This condition is exacerbated by limited road safety facilities and low compliance among road users. 54% of students crossed the road following the 4T procedure (pause, look right, look left, look right again), while 28% of escorts stopped in designated safe areas. Based on these results, the study recommends implementing a single-type ZoSS supported by safety features such as road markings, traffic signs, and rumble strips. The application of ZoSS is expected to enhance user discipline, improve traffic service levels, and reduce accident risks in school environments, particularly at SMK Negeri 2 Wonosari.
