Abstract

Earthquake-induced collapse of non-engineered masonry walls remains a primary cause of casualties. This study presents a three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) using MSC Marc/Mentat to evaluate the seismic behavior of a masonry wall confined by reinforced concrete columns and beams. The wall, beams, and columns were modeled using solid elements, while the steel reinforcement was simulated via truss elements under a macro-modeling approach. Concrete and steel were defined using Mander’s multi-linear model and a bi-linear curve, respectively. A Eurocode model with isotropic hardening represented the masonry’s plastic flow, with contact analysis. The FEA utilizing Wisnumurti’s elastic modulus (244 MPa) yielded load-displacement curves and energy absorption capacities highly consistent with experimental data, significantly outperforming FEMA 306 and MSJC models. The deformed shape confirmed that the nonlinear contact analysis effectively captured distinct physical separation along the wall-frame interface due to bond failure. Equivalent total strain contours revealed that the masonry panel behaved as a rigid block undergoing rocking mechanisms, with peak strains reaching 0,0095 concentrated at the corners. Consequently, structural damage is predicted to manifest as corner crushing and interface degradation rather than diagonal shear cracking.
