Abstract
The waste problem in developing countries remains relevant and affects developing countries with limited resources and poor regulatory and law enforcement systems. Using an integrated waste bank system in Kalisalak Village, Batang Regency, in the form of community service, is an example of applying the PAR approach in waste management and rural development. A series of “waste management and rural development” activities consisting of the integration of the 3R Principles of waste management (reduce, reuse, recycle) as framed by the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia No. 13 of 2012 on waste management, development of a management structure, and monitoring and evaluation of the system, along with training on the “waste bank” system. The findings of this inclusive sustainable waste management focused on rural community development show behavioral changes in community waste sorting practices, a 35% increase in inorganic waste materials collected and processed in the organized community within three months, and monetary savings from the products made that can be utilized. Furthermore, the solidarity of the “waste bank” managers increases community creativity. This experience confirms that using an integrated waste bank is an example of an innovative paradigm shift that can potentially bring change to rural waste management.
