Abstract

The decreasing availability of conventional pavement materials necessitates the exploration of alternative materials that are of high quality and locally available. In Bancar, Tuban, East Java, there is an abundant supply of red silica sand (RSS), which has the potential to be utilized in pavement mixtures. This study investigates the use of RSS as a substitute for fine aggregate in (AC-BC) mixtures and evaluates its effects on the volumetric properties, structural strength, and durability of the mixtures. This research was conducted experimentally in a laboratory setting. The first stage involved testing the physical properties of aggregates and asphalt binder. The second stage determined the optimum asphalt content for AC-BC mixtures with RSS substitution levels of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Subsequently, mixtures were prepared for each substitution level and tested to evaluate their volumetric characteristics, structural performance, and durability. The results indicate that RSS can be used as a fine aggregate replacement in AC-BC mixtures at substitution levels ranging from 0% to 100%. In terms of strength, volumetric properties, and durability, all substitution variations met the required specifications. However, increasing the proportion of RSS tended to reduce the strength and durability of the mixtures while increasing flow values and volumetric characteristics. Despite these trends at higher substitution levels, red silica sand remains a viable alternative fine aggregate for AC-BC mixtures.
